Find it on YouTubeThe city of Blackmere lay cloaked in a cold mist, its winding streets quiet under the weight of night. In the shadows of its grand cathedral, Rykard, The Shadowed, waited. He leaned against the stone wall, his dark cloak blending with the inky blackness around him. His dagger rested lightly in his hand, its edge glinting faintly in the moonlight.
Tonight, a deal would be struck. One that could either save Albion—or damn it.
The Meeting
The faint scrape of boots against cobblestone signaled the arrival of his contact. Emerging from the mist was a figure cloaked in crimson, their hood obscuring their face. Their movements were smooth, deliberate, as if they feared no shadow.
“Varrick,” Rykard said, his voice low. “I thought you’d send an envoy.”
The figure removed their hood, revealing the sharp, calculating features of The Bound Chancellor. Varrick’s eyes held no warmth, only the cold fire of ambition. “This is too important to leave in another’s hands. You have something I need.”
“And you have what I want,” Rykard replied, slipping a folded parchment from his cloak. “The Dragon Kin’s movements. Their supply lines. It’s all here.”
Varrick stepped forward, reaching for the parchment, but Rykard pulled it back. “Not so fast. My price first.”
The chancellor’s lips curled into a smirk. “Always the mercenary. What do you want, Rykard?”
“Names,” Rykard said, his voice sharp. “The ones who sold Blackmere’s defenses to the Dragon Kin. The ones who let my people burn.”
The Bargain
Varrick’s smirk faltered, replaced by a calculating gaze. “You’re asking for dangerous knowledge.”
“And you’re trading with dangerous people,” Rykard shot back. “Do we have a deal or not?”
Varrick hesitated, then nodded. “Very well. The names you seek are within this ledger.” He produced a small leather-bound book from his cloak, its pages filled with meticulous handwriting.
Rykard handed over the parchment, snatching the ledger in return. He flipped through its pages, his eyes scanning the names. His heart clenched as he recognized some of them—noble families, merchants, even members of Blackmere’s guard. Betrayers all.
“You got what you wanted,” Varrick said, tucking the parchment into his robes. “Now we are even.”
Rykard looked up, his expression dark. “We’re never even, Varrick.”
The Ambush
The sound of distant footsteps echoed through the streets. Rykard’s instincts flared, and he pressed himself into the shadows. “You brought company?” he hissed.
Varrick raised his hands, feigning innocence. “Not mine.”
From the mist emerged a squad of Dragon Kin soldiers, their black armor gleaming. At their head was a tall figure with reptilian features, their eyes glowing with malice.
“Ah, the Shadowed,” the figure hissed, their voice a serpentine rasp. “We’ve been hunting you.”
Rykard’s dagger was in his hand in an instant, but his glare shifted to Varrick. “You sold me out?”
The chancellor stepped back, his expression unreadable. “Consider it insurance. If you survive, perhaps we’ll speak again.”
Before Rykard could reply, the Dragon Kin soldiers charged.
The Fight in the Shadows
Rykard moved like a wraith, his dagger flashing in the dim light. He struck with precision, his blade finding the gaps in the soldiers’ armor. One by one, they fell, but their numbers were overwhelming.
He ducked beneath a sword swing, his cloak swirling around him. Shadows clung to him like a second skin, his movements fluid and unpredictable. But the Dragon Kin leader was relentless, their blade cutting through the air with deadly speed.
“You cannot run forever, Shadowed,” the leader snarled, their strikes forcing Rykard back. “The darkness will consume you.”
“I am the darkness,” Rykard growled, his dagger sinking into the leader’s side. They howled in pain, but Rykard didn’t wait to see them fall. He disappeared into the mist, the ledger clutched tightly in his hand.
The Aftermath
Hours later, Rykard stood atop a crumbling tower overlooking Blackmere. The ledger lay open before him, its pages illuminated by the faint light of the moon. He traced his finger over the names, each one a reminder of the betrayal that had cost his city everything.
Varrick’s words echoed in his mind: “Dangerous knowledge.”
Rykard closed the ledger and tucked it into his cloak. Dangerous or not, he would use it. The traitors would pay, one by one, until Blackmere’s honor was restored.
As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, Rykard disappeared into the shadows, his path set. The Dragon Kin might have Blackmere’s ruins, but the fight for Albion was far from over.
