The gilded halls of Brynmor’s grand palace glistened with the light of a thousand torches, yet no warmth reached its cold stone walls. Varrick, The Bound Chancellor, sat at the council table, his quill scratching across parchment as he reviewed another decree in service of Albion’s noble houses. His robes, once a vibrant crimson, now hung heavy with the weight of secrets, their gold trim dulled by the shadows that clung to him.

The room was silent save for the steady rhythm of his quill, but Varrick felt the presence long before he heard the voice.

“You wear your chains well, Chancellor,” the figure whispered, emerging from the shadows. It was Malakar, The Firstborn of Shadow, his towering form cloaked in an aura of malevolence. His crimson eyes burned with an intensity that made Varrick’s hand tremble.

“I serve Albion,” Varrick said, his voice steady though his heart pounded. “Not you.”

Malakar’s laughter filled the chamber, low and mocking. “You serve only yourself, Varrick. Albion is merely the mask you wear.”

The Cost of Ambition

Varrick rose from his seat, his quill falling forgotten to the table. “I have done what was necessary to preserve the realm. My choices have been just.”

“Just?” Malakar’s voice dripped with derision. He gestured toward the chamber doors, and they creaked open, revealing a vision of Brynmor’s streets. The people, once proud and prosperous, now shuffled through the shadows, their faces gaunt with hunger and fear. Soldiers patrolled with swords drawn, their armor marked with the sigil of the Dragon Kin.

“This is the justice you claim?” Malakar hissed. “Your decrees have turned Brynmor into a prison, its people into slaves. And yet you call yourself their savior.”

Varrick’s hands clenched into fists. “You twisted my hand! It was your whispers that poisoned the council, your threats that forced me to act!”

“And you accepted them willingly,” Malakar said, stepping closer. “Because you craved power. Because you feared irrelevance more than you feared me.”

The Binding

Varrick’s defiance faltered as Malakar’s shadow loomed over him. “What do you want from me?” he whispered, his voice laced with desperation.

Malakar smiled, a cold, cruel expression. “You are already mine, Chancellor. But you will make it official.”

From the folds of his cloak, Malakar drew a fragment of obsidian, its surface etched with glowing red runes. The Shard pulsed faintly, as if alive. “Take it,” he commanded, holding it out to Varrick. “Accept its power, and Brynmor will rise again. Reject it, and your people will burn.”

Varrick stared at the Shard, its malevolent energy seeping into the air around it. He knew its power came at a price, but the weight of Brynmor’s fate pressed heavily on his shoulders. His hand trembled as he reached out.

“I have no choice,” he whispered.

“There is always a choice,” Malakar replied, his voice a taunt.

The moment Varrick’s fingers brushed the Shard, pain lanced through his body. The runes flared to life, burning into his skin as chains of shadow wrapped around him. He fell to his knees, gasping as the Shard’s power coursed through him.

Malakar loomed over him, his laughter echoing through the chamber. “You are bound to me now, Chancellor. Serve me well, and I may yet grant you a measure of freedom.”

The Consequences

When Varrick rose, his eyes glowed faintly with the Shard’s light. His mind was sharper, his strength greater, but he felt the weight of the chains that now bound his soul. He turned to Malakar, his voice hollow. “What would you have me do?”

“Continue as you have,” Malakar said, his tone casual. “Rule Brynmor. Expand your influence. But ensure that Albion’s heroes find only closed doors and broken alliances. Their failure will be your triumph.”

Varrick nodded, though his heart twisted with guilt. As Malakar vanished into the shadows, Varrick turned back to the table. The decrees before him seemed heavier now, their words tainted by the darkness he had invited into his life.

A Glimmer of Defiance

In the weeks that followed, Brynmor’s people saw a change in their chancellor. His decisions became bolder, his decrees more ruthless. The Dragon Kin’s influence grew, their banners rising above the city’s walls.

But deep within Varrick’s heart, a spark of defiance remained. He knew that his chains were not unbreakable. He began to write secret letters, encoded messages to Albion’s resistance, using his position to subtly aid their cause while maintaining the facade of loyalty to Malakar.

The duality of his life weighed heavily on him, but Varrick clung to the hope that one day, he could undo the damage he had wrought. He had made his choice, but the story of his redemption had yet to be written.
