The Chains of Greed
The chancellor of Albansreach has bound himself to the Chains of Greed. Lady Morwenna summons Eadric to the treasury beneath the palace.
The city of Albansreach was a jewel of Albion, its towers scraping the heavens, its streets alive with merchants, courtiers, and beggars alike. But beneath its gilded facade lay a rot. Whispers spoke of a shadow that had settled upon the court, of a darkness that bent the will of men and women to its grasp.
It began with the king’s chancellor, Lord Varrick. Once a man of integrity, he had grown increasingly secretive, hoarding wealth and power with a desperation that unnerved even the most cutthroat nobles. It was said he had made a pact with an ancient force, trading his soul for a treasury that overflowed with gold. And now, Albansreach itself was suffocating under his greed.
The Summons
Eadric of Blackmere stood before the gates of the royal palace, his weathered cloak streaked with mud from the road. He had been summoned not by the king, but by Lady Morwenna of Brynmor, an ally of the Sigil Knights and a patron of their fading cause.
Inside the grand hall, Morwenna greeted him with a nod. Her piercing gaze seemed out of place amidst the finery of court. “You came,” she said simply.
“You said the city was in danger,” Eadric replied. “What has happened here?”
“Varrick,” Morwenna said, her voice low. “He has bound himself to an artifact known as the Chains of Greed. They were forged in the time of Ebonyrath, imbued with the dragon’s power. With them, he commands both men and gold, but they have begun to consume him—and the city along with him.”
Eadric’s expression darkened. “Where is he?”
“In the treasury,” Morwenna said. “But be warned: the Chains do not only bind their bearer. They bind all who come near, feeding on their desires. If you enter, you must take care not to lose yourself.”
Eadric nodded grimly. “Then I will go alone.”
The Treasury of Shadows
The royal treasury was buried deep beneath the palace, a labyrinth of vaults and chambers brimming with gold, jewels, and treasures of untold value. As Eadric descended, the air grew thick with an unnatural heat, and the walls seemed to close in around him.
At the heart of the treasury, he found Varrick. The once-proud chancellor sat atop a mountain of gold, his form hunched and twisted. Around his neck and arms coiled the Chains of Greed, their links glowing faintly with a sickly green light. His eyes were hollow, his skin pale as ash.
“Who dares disturb my kingdom?” Varrick rasped, his voice echoing unnaturally. He turned, revealing a face that was barely human, his features warped by the power of the Chains.
“This is not your kingdom,” Eadric said, stepping forward. “You have enslaved yourself to a dragon’s curse.”
Varrick laughed, a sound that chilled the air. “You speak of curses, knight, but what are we without desire? It is greed that builds empires, greed that drives men to greatness. And now, all of Albansreach bows to me.”
Eadric drew his sword, Vigilance, its silver blade gleaming in the dim light. “The Chains have blinded you, Varrick. They do not serve you; they consume you.”
Varrick’s laughter ceased, replaced by a snarl. “You are a fool to challenge me. I am more than a man now. I am power itself.”
The Battle of Wills
With a flick of his wrist, Varrick sent the Chains of Greed lashing toward Eadric. The links moved like serpents, coiling and striking with unnatural speed. Eadric dodged, his sword slicing through the air to deflect the attacks.
But the Chains were relentless. They wrapped around Eadric’s arm, pulling him closer to the mountain of gold. As they touched his skin, a voice whispered in his mind.
“You could have it all,” it said. “Wealth, power, glory. The world would kneel before you.”
For a moment, Eadric faltered. Images flashed before him—a throne of silver, the adoration of a kingdom, his every failure erased by the weight of his triumph. But then he remembered the teachings of the Sigil Knights: Face the darkness within, or it shall devour you.
“I am not yours to command,” Eadric growled, wrenching his arm free. He raised Vigilance high and brought it down on the Chains, the blade’s silver edge cutting through their cursed links.
Varrick screamed as the Chains recoiled, their power disrupted. The green light dimmed, and for a brief moment, clarity returned to his eyes.
“Help me…” he whispered, his voice trembling. “Free me…”
The Cost of Redemption
Eadric hesitated. To destroy the Chains would mean destroying Varrick, for their power had fused with his very soul. But to leave them intact would doom Albansreach to ruin.
“I am sorry,” Eadric said softly, raising his sword once more.
Varrick closed his eyes, a single tear slipping down his twisted face. “Do it.”
With a swift, merciful strike, Eadric severed the Chains, their links shattering into fragments of green light. Varrick’s body collapsed, lifeless, but his features softened, his humanity restored in death.
The treasury began to quake as the curse lifted, the mountain of gold crumbling into dust. Eadric staggered out of the vault, the echoes of Varrick’s final words following him: “Thank you…”
The Aftermath
When Eadric emerged from the palace, Lady Morwenna was waiting. Her expression was grim, but there was a flicker of relief in her eyes. “Is it done?” she asked.
“It is,” Eadric said, his voice heavy with weariness. “The Chains are destroyed, and so is Varrick.”
Morwenna nodded. “Then Albansreach owes you a debt it can never repay.”
Eadric shook his head. “No debt. Only a lesson: greed will always return. Guard your hearts, or it will consume you as it did him.”
As he walked away, the city seemed to breathe again. The air was lighter, the shadows less oppressive. But Eadric knew that his work was far from over. The Chains of Greed were gone, but the dragons of Albion remained.
Epilogue
In the ruins of the treasury, a single fragment of the Chains lay hidden beneath the rubble. Its faint glow pulsed rhythmically, like a heartbeat. And in the distant reaches of Albion, a shadow stirred, its eyes glinting with the promise of power.
