Find it on YouTubeThe Library of Gildenspire was a place of legend, its towering shelves filled with scrolls and tomes that chronicled Albion’s history, magic, and forgotten truths. It was said that those who entered its depths emerged changed, their minds weighed with secrets no mortal should bear.
Tonight, its grand hall was silent save for the faint crackle of torchlight and the soft echoes of hurried footsteps. Eadric of Blackmere moved purposefully through the labyrinthine corridors, his hand resting on the hilt of Vigilance. Beside him, Callum, The Reluctant Scribe, struggled to keep pace, clutching a leather-bound journal to his chest.
“Remind me why we’re here again?” Callum asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Eadric glanced at him, his expression grim. “The Dragon Kin have unearthed an artifact—an ancient stone said to hold whispers of the world’s creation. If we don’t find it first, they’ll use it to unravel Albion’s defenses.”
Callum hesitated, his fingers tightening around the journal. “And what if the stone is too dangerous for us as well?”
Eadric’s jaw tightened. “That’s a risk we have to take.”
The Discovery
Deep within the library, they came upon a chamber unlike any other. Its walls were carved with intricate runes, and at its center stood a pedestal of black stone. Upon it rested the artifact: the Whispering Stone.
The stone was unassuming at first glance, a smooth, oval-shaped object no larger than a man’s fist. But as Eadric approached, he felt its presence—a pulsing energy that seemed to reach into his very soul.
“Stay back,” he said, holding out a hand to Callum. “This… this is not ordinary magic.”
Callum nodded, though his eyes were fixed on the stone. “Do you hear that?” he murmured.
Eadric frowned. “Hear what?”
“The whispers,” Callum said, stepping closer. “They’re… calling to us.”
The Temptation
As Eadric reached for the stone, the whispers grew louder, filling his mind with a thousand voices speaking in unison. They spoke of power, of knowledge, of the means to end the Dragon Kin’s tyranny once and for all.
“Take it,” the voices urged. “With us, you will be unstoppable.”
Eadric hesitated, his hand hovering above the stone. His instincts screamed at him to withdraw, but the whispers were intoxicating, promising the strength he needed to protect Albion.
“Eadric,” Callum said softly, his voice breaking through the din. “Don’t listen to them. The stone’s power is not meant for us.”
Eadric turned to him, his brow furrowed. “If this is what it takes to save Albion—”
“No!” Callum interrupted, his voice firm despite the fear in his eyes. “Albion needs you, not whatever the stone will make you.”
The Dragon Kin’s Arrival
Before Eadric could respond, the chamber trembled, and the sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the hall. From the shadows emerged a Dragon Kin warlord, his crimson armor gleaming in the torchlight. His eyes glowed with malice as he fixed his gaze on the stone.
“So, the brave knight has found the prize,” the warlord sneered. “But it will not save you.”
Eadric drew Vigilance, the blade humming with a faint light. “You’ll have to take it from me.”
The warlord laughed, his voice a guttural growl. “Gladly.”
The Battle
The chamber erupted into chaos as the warlord charged. Eadric met him head-on, their blades clashing with a deafening ring. Sparks flew as Vigilance struck against the Dragon Kin’s jagged sword, each blow forcing Eadric to dig deeper into his reserves of strength.
Callum scrambled to the edge of the room, clutching the journal as he watched the fight unfold. The whispers of the stone grew louder, tempting him to act.
“Use us,” they murmured. “Save him.”
Callum shook his head, his hands trembling. “I can’t…”
Eadric roared as the warlord’s blade scraped against his armor, the force driving him back. “Callum!” he shouted. “Get the stone out of here!”
The Choice
Callum hesitated, his gaze flickering between Eadric and the stone. The whispers grew insistent, their promises filling his mind. But as he looked at Eadric—his friend, his leader—he made his decision.
“No,” he whispered, his voice firm.
He grabbed the stone and hurled it against the wall. The artifact shattered with a deafening crack, its energy erupting in a burst of light. The whispers ceased, and the warlord staggered, his connection to the stone severed.
Eadric seized the moment, driving Vigilance into the warlord’s chest. The Dragon Kin let out a final, guttural cry before collapsing to the ground.
The Aftermath
The chamber fell silent once more, save for the labored breathing of Eadric and Callum. The stone’s remains lay scattered across the floor, its power extinguished.
Eadric approached Callum, his expression unreadable. “You destroyed it.”
Callum nodded, his hands still shaking. “It was too dangerous. Even for us.”
Eadric placed a hand on his shoulder, his gaze softening. “You did the right thing.”
As they left the library, the weight of their actions hung heavy over them. The Dragon Kin had lost a powerful weapon, but so had Albion. And yet, Eadric knew they had gained something far more important—a reminder that power without purpose was a path to ruin.
