The story

Kiernan trailed Rykard for weeks before the Shadowed pulled him into an alley and told him he was sloppy. Months of training later, he broke a gang of enforcers without killing one and became a silent guardian of Blackthorn's forgotten. 'Do you ever regret it?' he asked his mentor by a dying fire. Rykard told him the shadows give the power to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and that this is enough.
